An Introduction

I’m a “car guy”. This is a deeply meaningful point of connection with other car guys and box office poison for non-car people who wonder, “Is he going to talk at me about it now?” Well…yeah, I am. But not like that.

What I want to talk about is the question increasingly facing American automobile buyers – should my next vehicle be an electric vehicle? It’s a choice more and more people have made in recent years. 1.4 million electric vehicles (EVs) were sold in the U.S. last year, more than 9% of all new cars, and a record. Still, only about 1% of cars on American roads are fully electric and that means tens of millions of people have yet to make the transition. We’re still in the Early Adopter phase, but due to government incentives, increasingly favorable dealer offers, and strategic imperatives by manufacturers there is an inevitability that the Early Majority will soon enter the consideration set. That’s a huge group of potential buyers I’ll call the EV Curious, and I’m one of them.

We all know the push for EVs is to help lower our carbon footprint by reducing fossil fuel consumption. It’s an idea that most can get behind, but it comes with trade-offs and an unfamiliarity that takes time to overcome. A complicated decision with factors like vehicle cost, charging, the cost of charging, and a different driving dynamic. So I’m writing a series about EVs to help inform the EV Curious on the topics that influence the market and their decision as to whether one is right for them, now or later.

I’m not an expert. I’m someone with a little bit of background in automobiles, a bit in energy, a lot of enthusiasm, and less than 20 miles logged behind the wheel of an EV. I’ll be writing as I learn and learning as I write. I hope you learn, too, and if I’m as funny as I think I am, laugh a bit.

Here’s what I’ll cover:

  • Why are people choosing EVs? How are they using them and how has their driving experience changed? Who is still waiting and what will it take to get them on board?
  • What to consider when considering an EV.
  • What brands offer EVs? What about all the hybrids I see on the road?
  • The government’s role in policy and incentives.
  • EV marketplace trends.
  • My EV journey: shopping for and, hopefully, buying my first EV.

Check out my first post, which is the intro to a series “6 Things to Know When Buying an EV.”
