Series: 6 Things to Know When Buying an EV

The predominant news on electric vehicles (EVs) lately is that sales have stalled and hybrids are the new darling. The market is running out of Innovators and Early Adopters and the Early Majority remain mostly curious, but wary of EVs. Charging infrastructure hasn’t grown as hoped and Tesla recently cut its entire Supercharger division, a blow to the most extensive and reliable network in the U.S. So if you were once bullish about an EV for your next purchase and considering a hybrid instead, why should you still consider one and how should you decide? In this series “6 Things to Know When Buying an EV,” I’ll write about the factors you should consider. Here’s a quick overview of what I’ll cover:

Range: How far does an EV go on a full charge?

Charging: Where do I charge, and how?

Price: How much do EVs cost relative to Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles? How do rebates affect the cost?

Operating Costs: How much does an EV cost to own? Is electricity less expensive than gas? How about service costs?

Available Vehicles: What’s out there from which manufacturers? How does that fit with what I need?

Driving Experience: What’s it like driving an EV? Is it different, and how?
